According to the experts, the prostatic cancer may probably become the first killer to threaten the male health in ten years. Some people have known that green tea can decrease the risks of getting prostatic cancer for men. Is there any other food which can prevent the cancer? In fact, five kinds of food including soy bean, onion, pumpkin seeds, tomato and kiwi fruit can also protect the health of the prostate.

Soy bean can produce a kind of substance called "cow urine phenolic" to restrain the male hormones and protect the prostate after it enter the human body. According to the experts, people can cook soy bean into soup so as to make full use of the medical effect. The soup can also remove the internal heat for the human body.

Onion contains a kind of compound called "quercetin" which can effectively resist cancer for the human body. According to the research, quercetin can prevent the abnormal changes of cells. Onion also contains selenium which can resist oxidation to remove the free radicals and strengthen the metabolism of cells inside the human body. People can eat both cooked onion and uncooked onion in daily life. In addition, the quercetin can also be found in apple, tea or red wine.

Pumpkin seeds contain abundant fatty acid to maintain the normal functions of prostate. According to the research, 2% of cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia can be transformed into prostatic cancer. It is beneficial for men to eat some pumpkin seeds every day to improve the benign prostatic hyperplasia and prevent the cancer.

Tomato contains a kind of substance called " lycopene " to resist oxidation and eliminate the free radicals. The adequate intake of tomatoes can effectively decrease the risks of getting prostatic cancer for men. At the same time, the adequate intake of tomatoes can also supplement various nutrients for the human body. People can eat 50 to 100 grams of fresh tomatoes every day.

Kiwi fruit contains abundant amino acid, vitamin C, vitamin B1, carotene, calcium, iron and so on. The glutathione contained in kiwi fruit can restrain the cancer cells of prostatic cancer, liver cancer, lung cancer and skin cancer. People can mix 50 grams of mashed kiwi fruit with 250 milligrams of warm boiled water and eat such a kind of mixture two times a day.

Two large-scale, long-term studies have now proven that consumption of concentrated fish oil or oily fish can slash the mortality rates of men afflicted with the disease.

In the Physician's Health Study, over 20,000 men were followed for 22 years. The study conclusively proved that men who ate at least five portions of oily fish every week were 48% less likely to die of the disease than those who ate only one portion per week. Concentrated fish oil is particularly effective at blocking metastatic cancers. It achieves this by blocking the conversion of arachidonic acid into the hormones which feed the cancer cells. In this way, it actually helps to stop prostate cancer from spreading.

When tumor cells of the prostate gland metastasize and invade other parts of the body, such as the bone marrow, prostate cancer becomes a much more serious disease. It is precisely in this process where the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil intervene. Researchers at one British hospital, the Christie hospital in Manchester, found that concentrated fish oil omega 3's can inhibit invasion of the bone marrow by prostate cancer cells.

Another key finding was that omega 6 fatty acids actually increase the risk that prostate cancer will spread. What this means is that all men who have prostate cancer or are at risk for prostate cancer should avoid all foods that contain these fats, including vegetable oils, such as corn oil and sunflower oil, nuts and seeds, and foods that have been fried in these oils. Prostate cancer cells use omega 6 fats as fuel, and giving them this fuel encourages rapid growth of the cancer cells.

I have a lot of personal experience with biochemistry and various health conditions and I cannot stress enough that dietary changes are essential to getting healthy, regardless of the health challenges involved. There is no quick-fix that will work if we continue to eat an unhealthy diet, plain and simple.

The easiest way to protect yourself is to eliminate the aforementioned foods from your diet and to take a strong concentrated fish oil supplement in capsule form every single day. This is much more precise and much more convenient than having to eat five portions of oily fish per week and is also much cleaner, because most fish sold to the public today is contaminated with heavy metals, industrial chemicals and radiation.

Selecting a top quality brand of concentrated fish oil involves finding a company that publishes an independent certificate of analysis setting out clearly the strength of the product and the tests that have proven that it is clean and free of contaminants. There is no more effective, natural way to protect ourselves from prostate cancer, and, indeed, many other ailments.
A prostate is a gland in men that surrounds the neck of the bladder and the proximal part of the urethra. This gland produces a fluid that becomes part of semen. A prostate gland is a firm structure normally about the size of a chestnut. It is located in the pelvic cavity, below the pubis and the rectum. It can usually be felt by examination when enlarged. Therefore, it is important that men be checked by their doctor on a regular basis and knows what to look for should it become abnormal.

Prostate Cancer is the most common cancer among men in America. It has also been known to grow very slowly in the body. Most of the time it is found in men over 60 and generally in the late stages of the disease. Prostate cancer generally doesn't have any symptoms until it is in the late stages. It has been seen in men in their 30's and 40's and was found that they had a family history of the disease. Although studies have not shown exactly what causes prostate cancer, experts generally agree that diet contributes to the disease. Prostate screening is very important, especially if you have a family history of the disease. Normally the tests include digital rectal exam, blood testing, prostate ultrasound, CAT scans, or MRI's. Your doctor will decide which test would be more beneficial among your circumstances.

There are many different Prostate Cancer Treatments available such as chemotherapy, cryotherapy, hormone therapy, and prostate surgery. Based on the size and stage of the cancer, you and your doctor will need to decide which would be the best prostate cancer treatment option.

Basically, chemotherapy is prescribed in cases of recurrent or advanced prostate cancer that has not responded to hormone treatment. Cryotherapy, involves freezing areas if the prostate. However, studies have not shown the long-term effectiveness. If surgery is decided upon there are a couple of options for this prostate treatment. The first would be a laparoscopic prostate surgery, which is minimally invasive. This surgery is performed with the help of a small camera that will be inserted to help the surgeon to remove part of the prostate. However, men younger than the age of 75 and expected to live at least 10 more years get a Radical Prostatectomy. This procedure surgically removes the entire prostate and typically cures prostate cancer in men whose cancer is limited to the prostate alone.
You may get a cover for one month or for a year depending on the duration you think you are going to need it. Various insurance companies have different plans and you need to get a plan that is going to suit you. You may be between jobs and need to have an insurance medical temporary plan. Some of the features of plans include the ability to keep your personal doctor and even the hospital you normally visit.

The second feature is that there is coverage of prescription drugs and discounts, and also insurance for many prescriptions and medical services. However, many plans do not cover pre existing conditions and illnesses. Most insurance medical temporary covers cover only prescriptions, physician services, x ray, laboratory services, in patient hospital stay, skilled nursing facilities, inpatient and outpatient surgeries and rehabilitation. On the internet, you can read about the various plans and get to see the payment plans. Most insurance companies have provided flexible payment plans and they are very affordable to anybody who wishes to apply. It is good to have all the information before you start making any payments.

One of the insurance medical temporary plan is the Celtic plan which covers persons who are 6 months to 64 1/2 years and it does not cover pregnant women. You must also not be covered by any other medical plan. The plan is for all US citizens and people who have lived in the country for over 2 years and they must show the evidence that they are indeed citizens. The insurance medical temporary covers manipulative therapy, radiology and laboratory expenses, surgical charges, prescription drug charges, intensive care charges, hospital out patient charges, inpatient psychiatric charges and others. You should therefore know the kind of insurance you want so that you can get the best deal.

The best deal only comes when you have looked at the available plans. Most plans at first may look great but after comparing to others, you will realize that there are better insurance medical temporary covers to go for. There are no covers that are made for pregnant women and this is primarily because there is certainty that there are medical bills that will need to be paid. Also, all women who are pregnant may bring down an insurance company just because of the huge number of people that would apply. Pre existing conditions are also not covered for the same reason. Choose a cover wisely and you will be assured that in case of a problem, you have the financial aspect covered. Different states have different policies and when you are searching on the internet, you search for specific insurance companies in your home area. Temporary medical insurance is vital to have because it can save life.
This can be a chancy move, especially if you don't have other insurance options readily available to you.

If you've already left your job, then you've most likely already found out that obtaining affordable health insurance isn't the easiest task when you're between jobs. COBRA is an option that gives you the right to keep your insurance from your previous employment, but the monthly premiums are usually extremely expensive and something that many simply can't afford while unemployed.

Temporary insurance, which is a short-term form of health insurance, can be an affordable alternative to the high premiums associated with COBRA. It's designed to provide a bridge between the gap of finding your next job and leaving your former employer-sponsored plan. Having such a policy can remove the chance of not being protected against unforeseen injury or sickness while you're between jobs, but pre-existing conditions are usually excluded.

The premiums for short-term coverage policies are relatively much cheaper than those for COBRA, but the cost can still seem expensive for someone without a job. While finances may tempt you to put off insurance until you find another job, you should remember that financial security is the primary reason that individuals purchase short-term health insurance in the first place.

It only takes one unexpected hospital trip or admission to put someone without medical coverage hundreds to thousands of dollars in debt. For example, consider the financial repercussions if you suddenly develop appendicitis and need an emergency appendectomy when you don't have medical insurance and the average cost of an appendectomy is between $11,000 and $18,000 dollars. Countless financial studies have cited medical bills as one of the leading causes of bankruptcy in America. Having short-term health coverage to carry you until your next job can help avoid the catastrophe of being responsible for the total cost of medical bills from being uninsured.

Aside from the value of financial protection, short-term insurance also helps to avoid having future health insurance claims rejected under Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPAA) laws. In other words, individuals that don't have a break from credible insurance coverage exceeding 63 days are considered to have maintained a continuous coverage, which means that they won't be subject to exclusions for pre-existing conditions. And, many approved short-term policies are included in the realm of credible coverage, even if they have exclusions for pre-existing conditions.

Depending on specific state requirements, short-term policies may run for a term of anywhere from 30-days to one year. As far as payment goes, most short-term health insurance plans offer two different options - paying through a monthly installment plan or in a single up-front payment that will cover a specific number of days. Generally, single payment plans are slightly cheaper than monthly payment plans.

Of course, temporary insurance is designed to be just that…a temporary solution to ease your health and financial concerns. It's not designed to last longer than a year and should never be considered a long-term insurance solution. Once you've found another job, you should look into your new employer's insurance offerings and determine when your new coverage would start if it's elected.
It is separated in three distinct levels or stages with their own differences of infection spread. Breast cancer survival rates for stage 3 breast carcinoma is at 50 percent chance of survival in 5 year duration.

Stage 3 breast carcinoma is subdivided into three categories. Theses categories are stage 3 - A, stage 3 - B and stage 3 - C cancer of the breast. A stage 3 - A breast carcinoma usually means that the tumor inside the breast of the woman has grown up to about 5 centimetres in diameter.

The malignant cancer tumor has most likely spread unto the lymph nodes in the breast, armpit and the collar - bone.

Another case of stage 3 - A breast cancer is when the malignant tumor has grown about 5 centimetres in diameter and has spread only to the lymph nodes near the breast. There is a stage 3 - A breast cancer survival rate of fifty - one to fifty - six percent.

When the malignant cancer tumor of the breast has expanded towards the tissues of the skin, chest muscles, ribs and chest wall, it is then called Stage 3 - B breast carcinoma. In some rare cases, the malignant tumor may also affect the lymph nodes in the breast bone of a woman.

Breast cancer survival rates for this type of breast carcinoma plays at around forty - two to forty - nine percent chance of survival.

Stage 3 - C cancer of the breast is subdivided into two more classifications to differentiate them better. The two types of stage 3 - C carcinoma differ from each other because one is operable while the other is non - operable.

Operable stage 3 - C breast carcinoma generally occurs when the breast tumor has spread and affected the lymph nodes around the areas of the neck and the below the collarbone.

Inoperable stage 3 - C breast carcinoma on the other hand occurs when the tumor has spread and affected the lymph nodes above the collarbone of the body.

Medical specialists all around the world explains that the five - year breast cancer survival rates of stage 3 - C is around thirty - five - percent chance of survival.

One must take note that these statistics are based on years where cancer detection and treatment where not yet advance.

With all the advancement in research and cure for cancer today, cancer survival rates should become higher compared to the statistics last ten years ago.
Most women realize the importance of knowing about this type of cancer, finding out early if they have it, or if they are at risk of contracting it in the future. Knowing all the available options when it comes to treatment is also key since finding the right treatment will help immensely in fighting breast cancer effectively.

Because the earlier breast cancer is detected, the sooner and more effective the treatment is going to be, the first step is prevention and pre-screening. A monthly self-breast exam is the easiest way to screen for breast cancer. This can be done at home after getting the proper instructions from your doctor. In this type of self-examination, particular attention is given to any changes in the breast: color or size changes, the appearance of lumps or bumps, and pain or tenderness in particular areas. Once any of these problems is found, you should immediately notify your physician or gynecologist. They can then order more tests to confirm if it is indeed cancer.

A mammogram, typically recommended for all adult women, is another way to check for breast cancer. The age when you begin getting mammograms will depend on your risk factors for contracting breast cancer. The procedure will also aid in the detection of any changes in the breast, such as the formation of tumors or cysts.
There is the possibility that the tests described above could result in a positive diagnosis for breast cancer. If this scenario should ever occur, the important thing is to NOT lose hope. Unlike in the past, a variety of treatment options are now available. The first ones that will be offered will most probably be the traditional treatments. These include chemotherapy, radiation, hormone therapy, and mastectomies. These, however, do come with risks, are invasive, and often have serious side effects.

It is important to realize that there are now options beyond these traditional cancer treatments. A number of holistic approaches are available. There are now even clinics that cater to individuals seeking alternative treatment methods for breast cancer. Should you decide to pursue this option, the first thing that needs to be done is to find a medical practitioner who will support you. The guidance of a licensed physician to oversee your care remains a must. Finding someone who is willing to try other treatment modalities will make the process both easier and safer for you.

Nutrition is increasingly being recognized as one way of helping treat breast cancer and its symptoms. These include certain food types, vitamins, minerals, and nutrients. Haelan is a type of liquid soy bean extract that has been shown to help block cancer-cell blood supplies, boost the immune system, and help reduce the size of tumors. Another is flax seed oil, which has been credited with slowing cancer-cell growth and improving the condition of the immune system. Also, the removal of certain things from a person's diet has been shown to help. For example, studies have shown that a diet that is low in sugar can help in preventing cancer or in stopping cancer growth. Moving to a low-sugar diet may also aid in "starving" cancer.

Electronic or magnetic therapies are modalities that are also showing promise in treating various types of cancer, not just breast cancer. These types of treatments include electrotherapy and magnetic resonance. Electrotherapy is used to treat tumors in the breast with the aid of electrical stimulation. This technique works by destroying the tumor in a gentle manner. The procedure is typically done with local anesthesia and is not very invasive. Magnetic resonance, meanwhile, uses radio waves. These are set at a frequency that specifically resonates with cancer cells, which have a different frequency compared to normal, healthy cells.
These are just a sampling of all the alternative options that are currently out there for the treatment of breast cancer. Always bear in mind, however, that your particular treatment needs to be based on your beliefs, your cancer's aggressiveness, and your body's condition. Also, I cannot stress enough, the importance of finding a medical practitioner who is going to listen to your wishes, and go with the therapy that feels right for you.
It is a cardiac chronic medical condition in which the systematic arterial blood pressure is high. Hypertension is the opposite of Hypotension which is also known as low blood pressure. High blood pressure (HBP) can be classified as either primary or secondary. Primary HBP shows no specific effect, while secondary HBP may affect the kidneys, arteries, heart, or endocrine system. If HBP is not controlled, you may suffer some serious health problems that may become a huge problem on your health system. These health problems may affect your daily activities and if you are working these may affect your job and your salary.

Constant high pressure in the blood vessels is one of the risk causes of stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure, and arterial aneurysm, cardiovascular and renal disease. Hypertension can exist in several form and symptoms do not appear immediately until it is sternly high. It is common in the elderly and it is coupled with vascular dysfunction in the coronary circulation. This condition occurs when there is excessive pressure against the blood vessel walls and continues over several months, and then HBP is diagnosed. This may become a serious condition since it can damage the heart, eyes, and kidneys.

There are many factors that may be the cause of HBP These causes are due to inactive lifestyle, smoking, stress, visceral obesity, potassium deficiency, salt sensitivity, alcohol intake and vitamin D deficiency. These factors increase the risk of developing hypertension. The risk may also increase due to aging and some inherited genetic mutations. Hypertension can be inherited especially when the family has a history of this condition. Severe or secondary hypertension results from a particular cause. This type of HBP needs to be recognized since it is treated in a different way. Common causes of secondary hypertension are: kidney diseases, metabolic disorder, pre-eclampsia during pregnancy and illegal drugs.

Common symptoms of accelerated hypertension includes; headache, drowsiness, vomiting, nausea, confusion and vision disorders. Children may also experience the threat of HBP, some signs and symptoms are; seizures, lack of energy, failure to thrive, difficulty in breathing and irritability. Hypertension in children can cause headache, nosebleeds, fatigue, blurred vision, and facial paralysis.

Hypertension is usually diagnosed on the basis of persistently high blood pressure. Diagnosis is done by physical examination and measuring the pressure in the blood vessels. The patient's pressure will be checked during every physical examination. A laboratory test is important because it will identify the possible causes of your high blood pressure and it will also determine if it has cause damage to your heart, eyes, and kidneys.
Treatment varies according to the stage of the disease. Elevated blood pressure levels can be controllable with treatment. The treatment for hypertension will you recommend you to have a preventative lifestyle such as; dietary changes, physical exercise, and weight loss. These lifestyle changes will really help in reducing your high blood pressure. High blood pressure is very serious case and it must be taken seriously by the patient. Intense beams of laser rays or of focused light are directed at the skin. These beams travel harmlessly through the skin and the energy is absorbed by the follicles from which the hairs grow. The follicles are then destroyed by the heat, in ideal scenarios permanently, so that no further hair will grow. In reality only a percentage of the hairs' follicles will be destroyed, so the resulting hairlessness will not be complete. Often successful professional treatment can rid a body part of 70% to 80% of the hairs.

Commercial vs. Home Products

Mostly, these laser machines are intended for medical or professional cosmetic use only. There are highly good reasons for this: lasers are powerful tools that can cause significant injury to delicate human skin and organs, the eyes especially. So obeying strict safety procedures is important, and the correct training is necessary in order to perform laser hair removal properly and safely.

Some home devices continue to be marketed but the vast majority of these are simply not sufficiently potent to give customers the desired long term reduction of hairs that can be successfully achieved using medical or professional cosmetic lasers for hair removal.

The Tria Hair Laser Remover machine

A new device designed for personal use in the home, the "Tria", is the first machine to receive FDA certification to be sold over the counter as a hair laser remover.
Backed by several years of scientific studies, the Tria is created by a reputable company that refrains from making unrealistic claims.

Extensive scientific studies show that individuals can expect a reduction of around a third in regrowth of hairs a year after treatment, as compared to around 80% for individuals treated with the professional equipment used by doctors.

Hair Laser Remover Devices: Summary

If the most important factor for you when looking for this treatment is that you want the most effective possible treatment, then you should certainly focus on finding an appropriate professional clinic where you can be treated with the most powerful hair laser remover that is safe for your skin. On the other hand, if you are less concerned with the quality and permanence of the treatment and wish instead to have discreet laser hair removal in the comfort of your home, then you may wish to consider one of the modern home hair laser remover appliances.
Yet, it is a subject that must be discussed if you have been diagnosed with the condition. Actually, it also is a subject that should be raised to those fearing they have been exposed to asbestos and have not undergone a proper diagnosis from a physician. Once such a person realizes the severe life threatening nature of mesothelioma, it is doubtful the individual will wait much longer for a proper diagnosis.

Once again, mesothelioma is a severe form of cancer. It has taken the lives of many people that have contracted it. As a result, it is vitally important to seek out medical treatment as soon as humanly possible as this will potentially increase the chances of survival of the person with cancerous tumors.

The outlook of a person suffering from mesothelioma will be based on several factors. The only way to determine these factors would be to undergo a complete examination designed to determine the severity of the condition. Whether or not the cancer was detected early or late; the stage of the cancer; and whether or not the cancer has spread through the body would all be among the factors associated with how long a person's life expectancy will be.

So, while there are no guarantees whatsoever in terms of how successful treatment may be, early detection will have the greatest impact on mesothelioma life expectancy. The survival rate increases when effective treatment is instituted. Note: treatment always has a greater chance of being successful when cancer is discovered at an early stage.

To repeat, there is no way to uniformly determine a blanket mesothelioma life expectancy. However, there are statistics available that allow for researchers to examine the average life expectancy of one suffering from this cancer. There are three major forms that mesothelioma takes: pleural mesothelioma which afflicts the lungs; peritoneal mesothelioma which deals with the abdominal region; and pericardial mesothelioma which is somewhat rare and affects the heart. A fourth form, testicular mesothelioma is extremely rare and hardly diagnosed. With the three major forms of the cancer, mesothelioma life expectancy will vary.

Pleural mesothelioma is an incurable form of cancer and if undetected and untreated the chances for survival will range from four to 18 months. Peritoneal mesothelioma will only yield a five month to 13 month outlook if not treated. Because pericardial mesothelioma is so rare and research is limited, an estimation of the average life span when not treated is very difficult to ascertain.

Of course, with appropriate treatment, the ability to extend one's life span dramatically is possible. This is because treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation can slow down the growth and spread of the cancer cells. Chemotherapy and radiation may, potentially, destroy the cancer cells. Surgery can be employed to outright remove the cancerous tumors. The possibility of using combinations of any two or all three of the methods remains an option as well.

As previously mentioned, there will be a variety of factors that contribute to the ability for the treatment to be effective. The absence or presence of other diseases or disorders may play a role in how effective the treatment may be. In some instances, issues such as the actual location of the cancerous tumors can determine the treatment employed which, in turn, will affect life expectancy. A common example of that would be the presence of tumors near the heart. The high risk of performing surgery in such a region would often eliminate the procedure from consideration. The impact on one's life expectancy when procedures are reduced could possibly be negative.

Of course, a patient will need to do his or her part to extend life expectancy. Lifestyle choices can significantly impact how long or how short your life expectancy is. For example, someone that continues to smoke after being diagnosed with mesothelioma will drastically reduce his or her life expectancy. As such, it is well advised to follow all lifestyle suggestions made by a physician if the goal is to increase mesothelioma life expectancy.
The ability to extend mesothelioma life expectancy is never guaranteed. However, there are certainly ways this can be done. Determinations, however, will need to be made on a case by case basis.
People take drugs as a form of medication. There are also those who take drugs for pleasure. Drug dependent individuals never realize their addiction until their family members notice a sudden change in their mood and personality. We can say that a person is at his peak of addiction when they crave for the substance. They may also show some signs of changes in attitude, personality and behavior. They cannot live without a dose of cocaine, heroin, marijuana and other illegal drugs.

The purpose of this article is to know some of the causes why some people get hooked into drugs.

1. Curiosity. Some people are too curious, and they would like to try everything in life. They might be curious how it feels to be on the state of being "high on drugs."

2. Peer Pressure or Social Pressure. Since no man is an island, we tend to have friends and partners. Those who would like to be accepted on a circle of friends will do everything. They may be even forced to take drugs to test their loyalty to the group. A group of drug addicts can easily encourage an individual to take drugs because peer pressure is too strong.

3. Low Cost. There are illegal drugs that are too cheap and accessible to many. Marijuana is extraordinarily cheap, and they are available almost anywhere.

4. When a person lost a family member or a loved one. Those who suffer from emptiness tend to use drugs to alleviate their pain and emotional distress.

5. Competition in Sports. This is a prevailing issue among the athletes today. Some of them take drugs because it boosts maximum performance. The level of energy that they can show in the game may reach at the maximum level. Some of the drugs used by athletes include steroids and amphetamine.

6. Stress in the workplace. Those who have stressful jobs take drugs. They need it for long work hours and overtime.

7. Sexual Abuse. They maybe forced to take drugs by their sexual partners aside from sexual abuse that they experience.

8. Love life. Those who are often on a break up and failed relationship tend to take drugs because of low self-esteem.

9. Marital Problems. Bad relationships and a compelling husband or wife can also be the reason. Drugs can be used to reduce stress caused by marital arguments and misunderstandings.

10. Financial Problems. Even those poor people can still have access to illegal drugs. They do certain crimes in order to get money and buy the substance that they need.

Many people had been trying to combat drug addiction. There are instances wherein an individual can no longer fight the pressure that they tend to give in to the negative vice. Drug addiction can be addressed with counseling services and therapy. Family members often bring their loved ones to a family therapist or drug rehabilitation center to help them move away from drug addiction.
This discoloration can be long lasting, for weeks', or even months' time before it disappears. So African-American skin must be treated delicately.

It's a myth that all African-American skin is oily in nature. Often, this skin type tends to be dry, and needs no more than a good daily washing with a gentle, non-soap cleanser. Those with oily skin may need to wash two or three times daily. Never use harsh abrasive cleansers on your skin, or scrub it with irritating cleansing puffs.
You do not have to spend a fortune on skin care products to find ones that will work well for this skin type. Extra mild products designed for sensitive skin are ideal for African-American skin. Don't be tempted to use acne products containing harsh ingredients like salicylic acid, or you may severely irritate your skin.

Always test new skin care products before using by applying sparingly to a small area of skin to see if there is any reaction. You may save yourself from having an angry, inflamed face by taking this precaution.
Dark skin has more natural protection from the sun than pale Caucasian skin does, but that does not mean that it alone will protect you from harmful UV rays. Skin cancer is not unknown in African-American skin, despite the myths.

You should always apply a sunscreen or moisturizer containing sunscreen of at least 15 SPF daily. Remember to reapply every two hours if you are going to be out in the sun all day.

Don't forget that taking certain medications can make you more sun-sensitive as well. Acne medications, contraceptive pills and some antibiotics can all make your skin more susceptible to sun damage, so take extra precautions if you are taking any of these medications.

If you experience skin problems such as acne, it is often much easier to see a physician at the early stages of the problem than wait to address them when they have become severe. Visiting the doctor early may well save you money by keeping you from buying vast quantities of useless products that will not really help your condition.

When it comes to makeup, seek out brands that are made especially for women of color. These will enable you to match your skin tone perfectly. Most makeup lines are designed for Caucasian women, and the colors, especially the foundation, are all wrong for African-American women. Most women of color, unless they have very dark skin tones, tend towards warm tones, which calls for yellow-based foundations.
Those with beautiful dark skin tones often have a cool tone to their skin and will want to look for a foundation with pink undertones.

One easy way to determine if your skin tone is warm or cool is to check out the veins running on the inside of your wrists. Greenish tones mean that you are a cool, while bluish tones indicate that you have a warm skin tone.

To get the right foundation shade for you, it's often worth it to go to a department store and pay a little extra to find a foundation shade that will match your skin tone exactly. Often, you will find entire lines devoted to women of color that you just won't find in most drug stores, and you can try before you buy.

Blush is also tricky for women of color. Often, a simple sweep of bronzer over your cheek bones in a tone slightly darker than your skin tone. This looks far better on African-American skin than a garish swipe of pink blush ever could. Blush is designed to bring some color into pale Caucasian skin, and just does not look quite right on darker skin tones.

The eyes are where women of color can really have some fun. Their dark eyes allow them to use darker colors and look great in more dramatic looks. One thing to avoid is using dark brown shadows and eyeliners, as they really do nothing for you. Contrasting colors such as pink, blue or plum eyeliners enhance the eye, as do shadows in gorgeous metalics such as bronze and gold. Neutral colors such as mochas look wonderful as well.

Lipstick is one cosmetic that can really ramp up the drama for women of color. Their darker skin tones and sexy full lips beg for a swipe of color, and they can wear a much wider variety of colors than Caucasian women can. From bright pinks to deep reds and everything in-between, the sky is the limit for women of color. Just stay away from neutral colors as they can be too close to your natural skin tone and make your beautiful lips nearly disappear.

Factors that can cause teeth to darken include bacterial pigments, tobacco and even foodstuffs.

Some antibiotic drugs can also cause teeth to darken. The reason why a tooth darkens is that its mineral structure has changed and the enamel has become less absorbent or spongy. A number of methods and products have been developed with the purpose of whitening teeth. These products and procedures include bleaching strips, bleaching gels, bleaching pens and laser bleaching.

The Cost of Having Your Teeth Whitened

The cost of dental bleaching depends on several factors which include the dentist's fee, the duration of the treatment and the materials used, during and after the bleaching procedure. The cost of teeth bleaching can vary, from as low as $5 to as high as a thousand dollars and more. The level of effectiveness of the product or procedure is directly proportional to its cost, meaning the more expensive methods will admittedly be more effective. In general however, the average fee for a standard dental bleaching procedure is around $500. The cost of dental bleaching is not usually covered by dental insurance.

Benefits of Dental Bleaching

Generally, people have their teeth whitened in order to have better-looking smiles and thus have an improved appearance. In most societies, whiter teeth correspond to beauty, as well as a healthy lifestyle. Having whiter teeth gives a person more self-confidence, thus becoming less conscious. Having teeth whitening encourages people to smile often, contributing to the prevention of facial wrinkles and thus eventually achieving a youthful and more energetic appearance.

Disadvantages of Dental Bleaching

Although there have been a lot of praises given to the usefulness and effectiveness of having teeth whitened, some disadvantages have also been pointed out. A person who undergoes a dental bleaching procedure may experience soreness of the teeth or gums, or both. In some cases, the soreness only disappears when bleaching has been discontinued. This is because the gums may be oversensitive to the chemicals that have been used as bleaching agents.

Over-bleaching (unnatural, overly white teeth) may also result from the procedure. An increased risk for sensitivity to hot and cold may also result from dental bleaching. More serious possible risks with dental bleaching include pain due to having oversensitive teeth, chemical burns, and even tongue cancer as a result of teeth whitening.
However, there are several key issues that may cause an individual to fail to achieve their personally set goals. These issues include lack of motivation, an unhealthy home life, a chaotic work schedule, and in some cases lack of will power.

Know Your Body

The most difficult part of any exercise and diet plan when losing weight is discerning why the program does not seem to be working. Some people will follow the rules of their regimen perfectly, but they will still see minimal results. The truth is that the human body is a unique organism. The biochemical structure of one human being will not always coincide with another. There are a few things to keep in mind, no matter what type of diet or exercise plan an individual might be on.

Carbohydrates are the body's primary fuel source. If the body is filled with carbohydrates during exercise then this fuel will be used first. This means that no real weight will be lost until most of these carbs are used by the body. It can take as long as twenty minutes or more of running or jogging before a fuelled up body even begins to touch fat stores. To remove this issue, it is important to try and go on a morning jog, walk, or run, prior to eating any carbohydrates. Upon waking in the morning, the body will be at its lowest carbohydrate level. This will allow fat to be utilized more quickly in the process.

Another important factor for weight loss is to remember to drink plenty of water. This is vital in any exercise and diet regimen.

Know Your Schedule

Many people complain that they do not have the time to work out or to eat a proper meal. In some extreme cases this might actually be true. However, this is often cited by an individual who does not have the motivation to find the time needed for losing weight. There is no need to perform all of a day's exercise at one time. A few minutes of vigorous exercise performed at different times of the day will allow for excellent benefits and will keep the metabolism running higher as well.

Try to run before work, or lift weights. When it comes to eating right, prepare meals in advance for the next day. This keeps the hunger pains down, and allows for better quality of food preparation and consumption as well.

Know Your Friends

There are many people who pay lip service to a desire to help their friends lose weight. They promise to eat healthier around them or to run with them. The important thing to remember is that you must lose weight for you and not for your friends. Even if your friends decide not to help you as they promised, it is important to remember that a slimmer healthier you, is your goal and not theirs. Otherwise their lack of aid becomes an excuse that many people use to give up.

Overall the best advice beyond knowing your body, schedule, and friends is to remember that you are the master of your body. Your body is a vessel and a tool of your will. Harden your resolve and you will harden your body as well.
The difficulty comes into play when seeking the proper amount of damages for your pain and suffering. To errantly select a lawyer and rush into litigation would doubtfully lead to the desired outcome. As such, a proper approach is needed to increase the odds that the lawsuit ends up being a successful one.

Many people are seeking such legal remedies these days as the sheer numbers of diagnoses of mesothelioma cancer have increased tremendously over the past two decades. Despite the fact that more and more information has been discovered about the cancer risks associated with asbestos exposure, many older buildings are not effectively inspected for asbestos. Such a negligent oversight puts those entering such a building at needless and severe risk. In some cases, the exposure was so severe cancer developed in the exposed.

Do to the high number of mesothelioma diagnoses in recent years, a large number of lawsuits have been filed as a result. Filing such lawsuits in done for the obvious reason: there is a need to recoup costs associated with such a condition.

One thing that needs to be clearly understood prior to engaging in any legal action is that there are no guarantees of any outcome. This is true no matter how legitimate your claim is. Once a litigant realizes this fact, the litigant will understand the extreme need for hiring the right attorney to represent them in the case.
How do you know whether or not you are hiring the right attorney for the mesothelioma lawsuit? A multitude of factors will determine whether or not the attorney you are considering is the right one for your needs. Probably the most important factor would be the experience level of the attorney. Has this particular attorney represented a large number of litigants in mesothelioma cases? Experience counts for a lot and any lawyer that does have a lot of experience with such cases would be one well worth considering hiring.

It may be wise to define the experience the attorney possesses into more concrete terms. In other words, how many mesothelioma cases has the attorney represented? Does the attorney specialize in these types of cases or does are mesothelioma cases one type of case in a long list of liability areas in which the attorney represents?

There are also attorneys that take part in mesothelioma cases on an exclusive basis. In other words, they do not handle other civil cases and are experts in the exclusive representation of mesothelioma cases. Seeking out such specialists may be the better option since specialization can some with insights and experience other attorneys may not possess.

• Experience alone, however, is not an indication of skill. The attorney must have a "track record" for success litigation and settlements. Questions that need to be asked are:
• What percentage of cases represented are settled out of court and what percentage are litigated?
• Of the cases that go to litigation, what percentage is won?
• What is the average award received in a settlement and what is the average awarded judgment of a case that goes to civil trial?

Determining the definitive answer to all these questions is a must before selecting an attorney. The entire goal of entering into a lawsuit is to achieve financial compensation for all the trouble. The attorney's past performance can be considered the best indication of how the attorney will perform in the future. Examining the amount of monetary awards in litigation and settlements will yield the answers to any queries in this regard.
Also, it is necessary to determine the attorney's fees for representation. Will the attorney solely take a percentage of the settlement or the judgment or are other fees involved? There is no right or wrong way to charge clients. The client does, however, need to feel comfortable with the fee process. Entering into an agreement with an attorney and then having to dissolve the relationship over costs halfway through litigation could prove disastrous and is best avoided.

All in all, when you are seeking to file a mesothelioma lawsuit you want to hire the very best attorney for your needs. The reason for this is fairly obvious: You want to walk away from the litigation with a positive outcome. Without the right attorney in place, this would prove enormously difficult.
Although this is a type of cancer that affects the plural lining of the lungs, it is not in fact lung cancer.

The prognosis for those afflicted with Mesothelioma is poor. Due to the difficulty of detecting symptoms and the extremely long dormancy period, many times Mesothelioma is not diagnosed until it is too late. When an individual is exposed to asbestos fibers, they become lodged in the pleura of the lungs where they will create scar tissue. This scar tissue will eventually turn carcinogenic and Mesothelioma will occur. Many people, even if only exposed for a short period of time to asbestos, may contract this disease.

Although smoking is a very quick way to damage lungs, it is important to understand that smoking does not cause Mesothelioma. However, smoking does complicate a person's chance of contracting the disease. Smoking may not cause Mesothelioma directly, but it can cause other life-threatening diseases such as lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema and asbestosis. Asbestosis is not a form of Mesothelioma, but it does assist in the development of the cancer.

If a patient is diagnosed with Mesothelioma, it is vital that they stop smoking immediately. The statistics that surround smoking are devastating. Although smoking does not cause Mesothelioma, it does increase the chance of contracting lung cancer by 50% or even more! A patient who is a smoker is more likely to have a lung-related disease than a person who has been exposed to Mesothelioma for several years. This prior fact goes to show just how damaging and serious the effects of smoking are on the lungs.

Both Mesothelioma and lung cancer caused by smoking are very serious due to their detection difficulty. The severity and type of symptoms are dependent upon many factors. For Mesothelioma patients, the amount of asbestos inhaled and the extent of exposure will determine the side effects and severity of the cancer. For lung cancer caused by smoking, the amount of smoking per day and how long a person has smoked will determine the side effects and severity.

A smoker who has been exposed to asbestos at any point in his or her life should get tested immediately for both Mesothelioma and other types of lung-related illnesses, even if symptoms are non-existent. Again, it is important to understand that Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer are two separate types of cancers, both dealing with the lungs or surrounding organs.
The big C, as we often call cancer, was never heard then. At this day and age, the ill-effects of our own unhealthy lifestyle plague us; of the environment, we thrive and varied toxic substances that we, knowingly or unknowingly take-in everyday. It becomes a bonus when we reach the age of 69, that is, by the way, 900 years behind Methuselah's long life. Despite the age of scientific finds and technological advancement, it is an irony that life span is cut short by a staggering 93%.

One of the primary causes of death in the 21st century is Cancer. The most- dreaded disease has overwhelmed the world with a record high of 33,900 deaths each year in the United States alone. Cancer is always believed to carry the "death sentence" most of which, we all know causes prolonged pain, agonizing effects on family members and results to untimely and painful passing away.

Although the number of deaths caused by cancer in the United States has actually decreased for the very first time in a period of 70 years, (the early cancer records began in the 1930's), the fact still prevails, Cancer is a dreadful disease, deadly and shattering. One of the rarest forms of cancer is Mesothelioma. As uncommon as its name suggests, this cancer starts its development from the methoselium, the protective lining of the body's internal organs. The most common cause of Mesothelioma is the overexposure to asbestos. This just reinforces the fact that environmental factors are likely the distinguishing causes of cancer, basically from poor nutrition, too much sunlight, smoking, obesity, free radicals and air pollutants in the environment.

Four parts of the body to which Mesothelioma take place are the following: pleura, the lungs' outer lining and internal chest wall; peritoneum, the abdominal cavity lining; pericardium, a sac that surrounds the heart and the tunica vaginalis, a sac that covers the testis.

People who suffer from Mesothelioma can trace back their life and exposure to asbestos and glass particles. Most often than not, these people are directly exposed with jobs using either asbestos or indirectly involved with them like washing clothes with a loved one exposed to asbestos or inhaling residue from a nearby asbestos company. Although Lung Cancer is largely related to Mesothelioma, smoking is not the main cause of this dismaying disease, but it still intensifies the plausible risk of it.

The main causes of Mesothelioma would greatly comprise weight loss, loss of appetite, chest pains and shortness of breath. Although rare, Mesothelioma, when detected early can be countered with chemotherapy, radiation therapy and sometimes, surgery.
Apart from the obvious help you will need in dealing with illness and the trauma that surrounds it, you may be eligible to make a Mesothelioma claim for compensation. Compensation is paid where there is proven blame for the disease. However there are special rules for making a Mesothelioma compensation claim and you should take legal advice as soon as possible.

In the case of a Mesothelioma claim, compensation is typically claimed from the insurers of the company who are at fault for allowing you, or your family member, to come into contact with asbestos. Because Mesothelioma can take between 30 and 40 years to develop after exposure to asbestos, in most cases the companies responsible ceased to exist many years ago but compensation would be sought from the insurers of the company involved. The insurance companies need to be traced and blame has to be proved and it is important that legal advice be sought as soon as possible which will increase your chance of securing compensation.

There are legal experts who specialize in making a Mesothelioma claim and by making a quick search of the Internet you should be able to find one in your own locality. A local law firm is not essential, but experience in making Mesothelioma claims is. Although at this time there will be many important issues on your mind, it is worth taking the time to deal with the compensation issue at your earliest convenience, as you may find the compensation award very useful at a later date. Once you have secured the services of a Mesothelioma claim expert, they will deal with everything for you with regard to compensation, and you will be able to get on with other pressing issues.

A Mesothelioma claim will generally be made for compensation covering many different elements. For example, the illness itself, loss of earnings, items needed as a result of the illness, special foods, mobility aids, care provided by family members, care provided by professionals, hospital travelling expenses etc. All these extra costs you will incur will undoubtedly place a heavy burden on your financial situation, so it is imperative that you seek professional advice, and set the wheels in motion to get your Mesothelioma claim for compensation under way.
Reading it you would think that no one has ever survived peritoneal mesothelioma beyond a year or so. This information is far from comprehensive. To help balance some of the negative information that is so prevalent on the Web, we present some case histories of long-term peritoneal mesothelioma survival as published in the peer reviewed medical literature.

9 Years +

In November 1979, a 73 year-old man had abdominal pain and distension and was found to have an abdominal mass. A laparotomy was performed that revealed peritoneal malignancy with ascites. A biopsy demonstrated that the tumor was malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. No special treatment was recommended other than draining of the ascites. In spite of the continuing ascites and the gradually-enlarging abdominal masses, the patient enjoys good health, and lives independently at home. How many more years (in excess of 9) this patient lived with peritoneal mesothelioma is not known.

15 Years +

A woman was diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelioma. She had surgery (“total excision”). Seven years later the peritoneal mesothelioma recurred and she had another surgery (“reexcision”). She remains well 15 years after the initial diagnosis. The patient did not receive chemotherapy.

17 + Years

In 1962, a 31 year-old woman had abdominal pain for several months and a mass was detected. She underwent exploratory laparotomy which found tumor nodules spread throughout her abdomen. The diagnosis of peritoneal mesothelioma was made. Complete surgical removal of the tumor was not possible. She was treated with radioactive phosphorus, radiation, and oral chemotherapy (cytoxan). She remained well for 17 years. In 1979 she had recurrent peritoneal mesothelioma. She was treated with cytoxan again and continued to live as of the writing of the published medical report.
Reading it you would think that no one has ever survived pleural mesothelioma beyond a year or so. This information is far from comprehensive and can be misleading. To help balance the negative information that is so prevalent on the Web, we present some case histories of long-term pleural mesothelioma survival as published in the peer reviewed medical literature. These pleural mesothelioma case histories are instructional in two ways: 1) they remind us that, like Paul Kraus, there are long term survivors of this cancer; 2) they allude to the importance that the immune system may play in mesothelioma.

12 Years +

In 1994, a 58 year old man complained of chest pain and shortness of breath. He had been exposed to asbestos previously through his work and was eventually diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma. The patient decided not to have any active treatment at that time and continued with his life. Five years later he had an enlarging painless mass on his chest wall. A needle biopsy confirmed it was malignant. The patient had a left thoracotomy, multiple pleural biopsies, and chest wall resection. Pathology reconfirmed that the mass was malignant pleural mesothelioma. Seven years after the chest wall resection and 12 years after the initial diagnosis, the patient has no symptoms and no evidence of recurrence. No chemotherapy or radiation had been given.

The doctors who wrote up this case history for publication noted that there was “moderate host inflammatory response” and that “spontaneous regression may be an immune-mediated phenomenon.” In other words, the doctors hypothesized that the patient’s own immune system may have played a factor in his survival.

14 Years

In 1986, a 65 year-old women had pain in her left chest wall. A chest X-ray revealed a small pleural effusion on this side. The patient declined an open biopsy and no diagnosis could be reached. She was treated for tuberculosis because of the high rate of this disease in her area. Her symptoms partially improved. In 1988 she had increasing pain over her chest. A biopsy was performed and malignant infiltration of the pleura was confirmed. She turned down treatment. In 1998, 10 years after the diagnosis of malignant pleural mesothelioma she had an enlarging mass over her left chest wall. Biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of pleural mesothelioma. She had a course of radiation and died in January 2000, 14 years after her initial symptoms.

The doctors who wrote this report counseled their colleagues that long-term survivors can occur with pleural mesothelioma and “one should not hold the belief that it is always the intervention that prolongs survival.” In other words, these doctors suggested that in some cases the intervention (i.e. chemo, radiation, surgery) may not be the factor that prolongs survival in pleural mesothelioma, but other factors may be at work.

17 Years +

In 1970, a 53 year-old man had shortness of breath and a sharp pain on his right side. An X-ray revealed a right side pleural effusion. The patient had worked at a plant adjacent to the Brooklyn Navy Yard from1955-1966 where asbestos had been used. In 1972 a thoracotomy was performed and a pleural biopsy was taken. The patient was diagnosed with malignant pleural mesothelioma. The patient never received any specific treatment for pleural mesothelioma. The report was written up in 1977 and apparently information about the continued life of this patient was not published after. We do not know how many more years or decades he lived.

The doctors noted in their discussion that, “This unusual course may be explained either by the presence of low-grade malignancy or by the unusual host resistance…Our findings are consistent with the concept that normal immunological function may effectively impede dissemination of the disease (malignant pleural mesothelioma).” In other words, these doctors are again alluding to how the immune system may play a role in managing pleural mesothelioma.
There are others. We have heard about them and spoken to some over the years. What is fascinating is that many of these malignant mesothelioma survivors have something in common - they have all taken steps to improve or enhance their immune system. Some used alternative or complimentary therapies (with guidance from licensed clinicians) while others participated in clinical trials of immune therapy.

This raises the question - does the immune system play a role in controlling malignant mesothelioma? Paul Kraus' experience and those of other long-term malignant mesothelioma survivors suggests that such a role may be possible. In other sections of this website we present case histories of malignant mesothelioma survivors who were diagnosed with either pleural mesothelioma or peritoneal mesothelioma. In some of the pleural mesothelioma case histories, doctors discuss the role that the patient's immune system may have played in their extremely long survival.

In 1986, an article appeared in a medical journal that discussed this very issue of malignant mesothelioma and immunity.(1) This research focused on the immune responses of 118 healthy people compared to 20 patients with malignant mesothelioma and 375 long-term asbestos workers who were cancer-free. The researchers wanted to know if there were any measurable differences in the immune responses of the mesothelioma patients. Their findings demonstrated a relationship between the immune system and malignant mesothelioma. For example:

·<span style="font: 7pt "Times New Roman";"> The number of total T (T11+) and T-helper (T4+) cells were normal in asbestos workers with cancer, but were significantly reduced in patients with mesothelioma. T cells orchestrate, regulate and coordinate the overall immune response.

·<span style="font: 7pt "Times New Roman";"> Most patients with mesothelioma had a profound deficiency in Natural Killer cell (NK) activity which is suggestive of the role the immune system plays in the control of malignant mesothelioma. NK cells are a type of lethal lymphocyte that target tumor cells and protect against a wide variety of infectious microbes.

In the discussion section of the report, the researchers stated:

“These findings led us to speculate that biological phenomena generally categorized as chronic immunosuppression associated with the presence of asbestos fibers in the exposed workers may have caused the eventual breakdown of the host’s surveillance system and the onset of neoplasm [malignant mesothelioma].”

In other words, the researchers are suggesting that malignant mesothelioma may result from immune suppression. If this is true it would provide the biological basis for the role that the immune system and immune boosting approaches may play in the management of malignant mesothelioma.
It may also have a direct bearing on the long-term success of your recovery. Having a steady job gives life structure and a higher purpose. It gives you a reason to set your ego-centric thoughts aside and occupy your time with truly productive activities, and it may also connect you to a whole new set of people with whom you can make a fresh start. In short, work is healing.

However, even in good economic times, it’s never easy for a recovering addict to find a job or transition back into work. That’s why returning to work is a precarious step in the process. Recovering addicts who can’t find work are much more likely to relapse or return to old patterns of thought and behavior. If you’re having trouble getting hired, you may be tempted to take your difficulties personally. Your may wrongly interpret job-related rejections as painful signs that the world doesn’t want you, or that trying to go straight is a lost cause.

In poor economic times, these difficulties can have a huge bearing not only on individuals, but on society as a whole, which magnifies the importance of employer understanding and of programs designed to help former addicts return to the workforce.

Returning to an Existing Job
A recovering addict returning to an established career faces a special set of challenges. You may be worried that opportunities for advancement have been closed off, that co-workers will gossip and look over their shoulders, or that you’ll be the first to go in the event of downsizing. The bad news is that, depending on how much your boss and co-workers know, these fears may not be far from reality.

At first, it’s understandable for your co-workers to have misgivings about your return, particularly if your addiction directly affected your job performance. The sad fact is that some addicts have trouble staying sober in the long term, and most people are aware of this, so you may need to give your co-workers some time to discover that your old problems aren’t coming back. Try to sympathize with them, and understand that their feelings aren’t malicious.

But there is also good news. Now that you’re getting better, any addiction-related problems that used to affect your job performance will no longer be a factor. You can now prove to the world what you’re capable of. If you’ve been around other addicts, you probably know that they tend to be passionate, bright, energetic people who just happen to be troubled. Once they learn how to direct their energies toward productive ends such as work, nothing in the world can stop them. Approach your job as if you have something to prove. Don’t be ashamed to take pride in your work and go above and beyond the call of duty.

Taking this approach to your work will be a positive use of your energies, and it will also be an investment in your future. If you can prove over the long term that your co-workers and employers have nothing to worry about, any doors that may have been half-closed to you before will be flung wide open.

Finding a New Job
If you’ll be looking for a new job, you may be worried that potential employers are going to find out about your past and discriminate against you. Even if your situation doesn’t require you to disclose your history of substance abuse, addicts are often hampered by spotty work histories, criminal records or a lack of good references, any of which can be sufficient reason for a potential employer to pass.

Because of these difficulties, other aspects of the job-hunting process, such as applications, cover letters and interviews, take on added importance. Even if your work history and references aren’t great, you can earn points by outshining your competition in all other respects. Put all of your energy into creating application cover letters that are tailored specifically to the job while showing off your enthusiasm and unique personality traits.

Come interview time, present yourself as the sober, responsible and productive person you wish to be. This is a time of new beginnings, and your past work history doesn’t have to haunt you. In your former life, did your problems stop you from doing the things that a responsible adult is expected to do? If so, now is the time to make amends.

That being said, there are organizations specifically designed to place recovering addicts in jobs, and there are plenty of employers out there who understand, first-hand or through a loved one, the difficulties that addicts experience. Treatment professionals working with you may take it upon themselves to connect you to one of these organizations, but it never hurts to ask. Also, check for helpful resources online or in the local papers.

Tips for Everyone

Talk to your therapist about your fears and anxieties about returning to work or looking for a job. Often, these fears are closely related to the deep-seated issues that caused your addiction. Your therapist can help you work through all of these feelings.

Avoid employment-related triggers. If your addiction was brought about or perpetuated by job-related feelings, avoid employment that will lead to the same circumstances. This may limit your options, but even if you have to start over in a new career field, the most important thing is to be healthy.

Learn skills to cope with stress. Teach yourself about meditation techniques to calm down during high-pressure situations at work. Also, learn how to let the small things go. Work wouldn’t be work if there weren’t unpleasant things about it. Accept these as part of life, and know that it’s all worth it in the end.

Set a good example. Each day that you live a healthy and successful post-addiction life, you’re creating a positive example for other recovering addicts who doubt themselves.

At work, substance abuse pose a major concern for everyone on the job. Every employee is affected by the problem because it increases the risk of mistakes and accidents.

Substance abuse in the workplace can also hamper productivity. It was president Ronald Reagan who made drug and alcohol testing in the workplace legal. The former president is famous for his war against drugs and substance abuse. During his presidency, Reagan instituted an anti-drug program with the slogan “Just Say No.”

More companies are beginning to say “no” to the hiring and employment of workers who use drugs. Thousands of companies have instituted drug and alcohol policies that attempt to remove substance abuse from the workplace. One of the main ways this is done is through a drug and alcohol screening process.

Random Testing
For many companies, the process of screening for drugs is random. Random drug testing is in the best interest of employers who want to know for certain that an employee is abusing substances. Random drug testing is not allowed in every state.

Professions that involve machinery or operating equipment (such as a car) are especially likely to have drug and alcohol screening policies. People who work in these particular professions have the capacity to endanger others, and employers want to ensure that their workers are sober at all times. By conducting random drug testing, a company can shield itself from any potential liability if a drug-impaired employee causes damage.
Companies have a professional reputation to maintain. This reputation can be threatened by individuals who misuse substances in the workplace. Financial damage can also ensue when a company employee misuses or damages property because they are not sober.

Legal Considerations
Companies must make sure that their drug screening policies are in compliance with United States law and do not infringe on the legal rights of their employees. When employers are not fully compliant with the law, the result is often litigation. Many lawsuits are often in favor of the employee rather than the employer.

Disciplinary Action
When individuals fail a drug test in the workplace, the employer has the right to take some type of disciplinary action. The action could be a refusal of hiring, probation or outright termination. If an employer doesn’t want to fire an employee, they can reassign the person to another position that poses less risk to others.

If a person is caught red-handed with drugs in the workplace, the problem can go beyond employment and fall into criminal liability. Companies have the right to call the police, which could result in an arrest. If the employee is fired and arrested, the consequences for that individual are normally dire.

People who are fired because of drug and substance abuse are denied the opportunity to get employment benefits. In addition to a lack of employee benefits, it may also be difficult for the individual to find new work in the future. Most employers want to stay informed about a potential employees’ past. Revealing a past termination because of a substance abuse problem could cost an individual a job or opportunity.

When considering drug and alcohol screening in the workplace, employers and employees should work together to solve the complex issue of substance abuse. The drug problem is not going away in the near future, and employees and employers must protect themselves and their work ethic from substance abuse.
It’s important to remember that random drug testing doesn’t solve the root issue of a substance abuse problem. Workplaces that conduct random drug and alcohol testing are encouraged to provide programs for employees who have an addiction problem. If the company is unable to offer this type of support, they can allow the employee the chance to seek help elsewhere, such as a residential treatment center or outpatient drug rehab. This is beneficial to the company and the employee, and being flexible can help companies support affected employees instead of punishing them.
You have to deal with drug cravings and withdrawal symptoms and a new way of thinking. It’s a time of significant change, and change is rarely easy.

A lot of us think we can break free from addiction on our own, and most of us try at least once or twice - and fail - before realizing we need help to quit drinking or using drugs for good.

One of the many reasons we need addiction treatment is that during the initial period of sobriety, we aren’t at our best. We aren’t ready or able to stay focused and committed to the battle that lies ahead. Depressive symptoms, for example, are very common during early recovery, and it’s hard to work up the resolve to fight for your sobriety when you can barely drag yourself out of bed.

Fortunately, depressive symptoms are generally transitory, especially when you get appropriate counseling and encouragement along the way.

Through participation in an addiction treatment program, you can access services that will help you manage and overcome depressive symptoms as they arise, so they don’t cause you to relapse.

Because depressive symptoms in early recovery are so common, it is important that you seek addiction treatment at a facility that employs licensed and trained mental health professionals that can help get you through the tough first weeks.

The Difference Between Sadness, Depressive Symptoms and Clinical Depression
Depressive symptoms include sadness, guilt, hopelessness, low self-esteem and confusion, as well as physical symptoms such as tiredness, insomnia, aches and pains.

While feelings of sadness or guilt are normal in some situations, a person with depressive symptoms will feel this low mood without legitimate cause. People who have depressive symptoms may or may not meet the criteria for a diagnosis of clinical depression. It depends on the number of symptoms experienced and how severe they are.

Why Depressive Symptoms Are Common in Early Recovery
There are a number of reasons why people feel symptoms of depression during the initial period of abstinence, such as:

People abusing drugs or alcohol often face significant life challenges that stem from their behaviors while using. They may have lost a job, have legal problems or face family separation. These challenges can create a lot of stress, and stress can increase the likelihood of depressive symptoms.

The use of drugs or alcohol can sometimes obscure an underlying depression. With the sudden cessation of drug or alcohol use, these symptoms can emerge.

Withdrawal from substances like alcohol, opiates, cocaine and methamphetamine can cause enduring depressive symptoms

How Depressive Symptoms Affect Your Recovery
Symptoms of depression during initial recovery are not only unpleasant, they also diminish your ability to participate effectively in an addiction treatment program and increase the odds of relapse.
People with depressive symptoms:

May feel hopeless, like treatment cannot work

May have trouble concentrating during therapy sessions

May miss (skip) therapy sessions

May have trouble interacting socially, such as in group therapy sessions

May have little motivation to participate actively in recovery activities

Interventions Used to Treat Depressive Symptoms
Since substance abuse treatment and depression treatment work best when they are integrated, drug rehab counselors can address both problems simultaneously.

Some typical interventions offered in a drug rehab for those with depressive symptoms include:

Education about the nature of depression

Behavioral interventions that help people with depressive symptoms change behaviors that perpetuate negative moods

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), a type of counseling that helps people take control over negative and maladaptive thought patterns

Motivational interviewing, which helps people focus and sustain the effort needed to overcome addiction and depressive symptoms

The Importance of Qualified Mental Health Professionals
Because depressive symptoms are a common experience among the newly sober, you should ensure that you get care at a facility that employs trained and licensed mental health professionals. These professionals can:
